Rescue Unwanted and Abandoned Companion Birds

Rescue Unwanted and Abandoned Companion Birds

Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue, located in Northern California, is dedicated to assisting commonly kept indoor pet birds. They rescue, rehabilitate, and find new homes for these birds, many of whom arrive injured, abused, neglected, or in poor health. The organization typically cares for approximately 500 birds simultaneously, with monthly veterinary bills averaging around $50,000. This project aims to support the funding of these crucial medical expenses.
Challenge

Many pets are given up because their owners are no longer able to care for them, financially or behaviorally. We rescue birds that are surrendered to us, that shelters turn away, that are found in empty apartments and foreclosed homes and even dumpsters, or that were released into the wild completely unable to survive on their own. Most animal shelters are designed to house cats and dogs, and are unable to accept or care for the needs of domesticated birds like parrots, thus needing to surrender
Solution

Those who surrender their birds to us are assured their former pet birds will receive the care and human interaction these intelligent, social creatures deserve. We have no central facility; we place these birds in foster homes until a suitable adoptive parent can be found. We are an all-volunteer organization, so virtually all (over 95%) of the money we raise goes toward veterinary costs and medical expenses, with the remainder for education and outreach.
Long-Term Impact

Our goal is to medically rehabilitate each of our 450+ birds sufficiently so that they may be placed in qualified permanent homes. Over time, we believe our education and outreach efforts will reduce the number of birds surrendered to us for various reasons.
